Our promise is simple: Your data is yours. We, the developers of KinKeep, do not collect, see, or have access to any of the personal information you store in the app.
1. The Offline-First Principle
KinKeep is designed to work entirely on your device. All core features—creating contacts, logging interactions, generating suggestions, and receiving reminders—function without an internet connection. No personal data you enter into the app is ever sent to or stored on any server controlled by us.
2. Information We Handle (And Where It Stays)
KinKeep acts as a secure, local vault for the information you provide. This information is stored exclusively in an encrypted database on your device. This includes:
Contact Information You Provide:
- Personal & Professional Details: Names, phone numbers, email addresses, physical addresses, relationship labels, company/title information, birthdays, anniversaries, and any other details you add to a contact's profile.
- Photos: When you attach a photo to a contact or an interaction, KinKeep makes a private copy of that photo and stores it within the app's secure internal storage on your device. The app only accesses the photos you explicitly select and does not scan your gallery.
Interaction & Memory Logs:
- Timeline Entries & Notes: Any text, titles, or notes you log about your interactions with your contacts.
- Memory Jar Entries: Any text or photos you add to the Memory Jar.
Saved Preferences:
- Saved Gift Ideas: A local list of gift ideas you have saved for specific contacts.
- Settings: Your preferences for notifications, such as the reminder time.
3. How We Use Your Information
Because all your data stays on your device, KinKeep uses it locally to provide its intelligent features:
- To Provide Core Functionality: To display your contacts, show your interaction history, and remind you of upcoming dates.
- To Provide Intelligent Features: All calculations for the Health Score, Gift Suggestions, and Conversation Starters happen entirely on your device. The app analyzes your locally stored interaction history and contact details to generate these personalized suggestions. Your private notes are never sent anywhere.
- To Send Reminders: The app uses your local data to schedule notifications for upcoming birthdays/anniversaries and to send "keep-in-touch" nudges for relationships whose Health Score has declined.
4. Data Security: Our Commitment to Your Privacy
Security is not an afterthought; it is our primary feature.
- Database Encryption: The entire KinKeep database file on your device is encrypted at rest using industry-standard SQLCipher with a key managed by Google's Tink library and secured by the Android Keystore system. This means that even if someone gained access to your phone's file system, your KinKeep data would be unreadable.
- Backup Encryption: The user-controlled Backup & Restore feature creates an encrypted backup file. You are responsible for the security of this file once you export it from the app.
5. Data Sharing and Third Parties
We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer your personal information to any outside parties.
The only exception is for subscription management, which is handled directly and securely by Google's Play Billing service.
Google Play Billing:
If you choose to subscribe to KinKeep Premium, the transaction is processed by Google. We do not receive or store your payment information, such as credit card numbers. We only receive confirmation from Google that you have an active subscription. We encourage you to review Google's Privacy Policy.
6. Permissions We Request
KinKeep requests a minimal set of permissions to function, and we are transparent about why we need them:
- Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS): This permission is required on modern Android versions to send you the "keep-in-touch" and "date reminder" notifications that are a core feature of the app. Reminders can be fully disabled in the app's settings.
- Storage Access (User-Initiated): The app does not automatically access your files. It only gains access to a specific photo or backup file when you explicitly select one through the Android file picker.
7. Device Sensors
Accelerometer: The "Shake to Reveal" feature in the Memory Jar uses your device's accelerometer to detect a shake gesture. This sensor data is processed in real-time on your device, is never stored, and is never transmitted anywhere.
8. Your Control and Data Deletion
You have complete and total control over your data.
- Editing & Deletion: You can edit or delete any contact or interaction within the app at any time.
- Export: You can export an encrypted backup of your data at any time using the "Backup & Restore" feature.
- Permanent Deletion: Because all data is stored locally, uninstalling the KinKeep application from your device will permanently and irreversibly delete all of your data.
9. Children's Privacy
KinKeep is not intended for use by individuals under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children under 13.
